A Black Hair at Work Rant

First hair style change +  job = anxiety

For black women in a workplace, surrounded by people who don’t look like them, changing your hair is like putting yourself on a pedestal to become a spectacle.

“Omg is it weave,” “how long did it take,” “I wish I could do that with my hair.”

I simply want two things:

  • Nothing at all said
  • Or “it looks nice”

A great girlfriend of mine felt this way at an old job and took the liberty to create a hair style guide for white people. Other wise known as shit you can Google yourself.

Maybe today caused for a rant blog.

“Omg I love your natural hair” “I actually love when you wear it like that better.”

Let me stop you right there.

Two things

  • Nothing at all said
  • Or “it looks nice”

You may ask yourself, what got Janesha in a tizzy!!!

I got my hair braided. It’s long, it’s blonde, it’s new. And yes, I worked remote for the day and sat in a chair for hours to get it done.

And I just started a new job in January and I’ve been wearing a straight jet black middle part sew in.

So of course, it’s the night before the show begins. I should not have to worry or consider how my blackness will be examined,  but I do and I don’t have the luxury of  not thinking of these things. Things might I add that I pay too much to not be able to fully enjoy in positive thoughts.

I won’t go on.

But if you work with me, or a black woman.

Remember.

Two things.

Ps. My hairs super cute.

Love,

JMoore
